Hella WIPs

So after joining the amazing WIP Nation, I've already got some great feedback on my Arctic Horror piece, which I'll be revising.  I'm also working on about five different pieces simultaneously to try and trick myself to not get bored with any one piece.  As long as I'm working on something new, the painting process gets less tedious, and by working on different pieces, I find that I'm painting each one faster, as since I'm taking breaks from each piece I reapproach each one with a fresh pair of eyes.

Anyway, here's two new WIPs (works in progress) for your viewing pleasure.

Larissa, Airship Mage, 1st Class

  Noxia, Queen of the Slime

Started working in two different styles, came out with two different points.  I'm a lot more happy with the direction Larissa is going, but I think it's just because I really focused on the figure in the slime painting first without resolving the background.  Thus, you have a much more finished foreground and a crap background, making me hate the painting, when I really just have to work on the background as much as the foreground.

Well, just gotta keep going.  I'm working on two other digital paints and a traditional piece, but they're in such a rough, crude, "I want to stab myself" point, I'll wait until they're a bit more respectable before posting them.

WIP..still

And progress.  Still chugging along.

It's weird that I'm usually okay spending 20+ hours on a traditional painting, but even spending 7 on a digital one seems super difficult.  At least it's coming along!  Still lots of rendering to do, more lighting on the background, etc. etc. etc.  Yosh!

Anyway, I'm already starting some loose sketches and thumbnails for other new pieces.  I asked some fellow Big Umbrella members for inspiration, I got "Punchline" and "Three legged Dog."

For punchline, I ended up with a sketch of a dark circus that has a bone bridge leading up to it and tons of crucified people staked around it.  For three legged dog, I had a rotting zombie dog eating it's own leg.    And who says I can't turn anything dark and creepy?  No one, that's who.

Anyway, if you have any interesting themes or suggestions for future paintings, I find I usually get inspired easier from other people than myself.  Comment away please!

Happy 2012

Yay for a new year!  I feel like more and more, years go by quicker and quicker.  I would assume that's a good thing, but there's already so much work to be done in 2012!!  Arg!

Anyway, one of my new goals is to develop two portfolios - one for book/CCG/RPG illustrations, and one for creature/monster design.

Here's a quick WIP (about three hours in) of an illustration I'm working on which I hope to print and put in the upcoming Big Umbrella "Girls with Guns" show.

11/17/10

Work in Progress of a new acrylic painting on canvas.  Not sure if I want to have a pattern on the background, of if I just want it a darker shade of red.

10/17/10

This is a quick sketch that I did while at APE, day 2.  It's going to eventually be a bird with a huge egg on the beach, and the bird is going to be saying "My anus hurts."

...
And yes, I do know that birds don't push eggs out of their anus (they push it out of their cloaca).

Double-header today.  Top is the sketch for the next illustration I'm working on about gravediggers taking a wrong turn, and the bottom is a WIP for an illustration about a succubus at work.  Yay creepy stuff!

7/23/10

Ever inspired by my partner, I decided to do a quick paint using some of the themes that Eve uses throughout her paintings.  Overall, considering the time I spent on this one I'm pretty happy.  Perhaps I'll work on this a bit more in the future..

07/11/10

A bit more work done on "The Chase."  I added the bridge, darkened some values, etc., etc.  Still a long way to go, but I'm going to try and work on it at least once a week until I'm happy.

PS - Thank you to everyone who came out to the show!  I'm exhausted and ready to pass out, but it was awesome!  I hope you feel the same (about the awesomeness, not the exhaustion).

6/26/10

Still a long way to go to a finish, but it's looking a lot better now, sorta like an actual illustration -_-.  The going is long and hard, but fun.

I may take a break tomorrow to whip out something a bit more spontaneous.  I'm not sure when I'll finish this guy, as I realized that I have to get crackin' on getting my work finished for Hyphen.  I'm not quite as good about documenting my painting process, so you may see some quick n' fun digital stuff over the next few days.  Just a head's up.

Trying not to let myself get sick of this and to take it all the way to a finish.  Much happier than yesterday (for obvious reasons).

6/16/10

Didn't have much time to work on this, but I darkened the foreground and did a quick lay-in on the castle thing.  So far to go...

6/15/10

A bit of process/WIP stuff...

First off is a scan of my sketchbook.  Next is the start of a rough color lay-in with the larger, detailed pencil sketches dropped in.

Quick color of the flying demon thing and the guy being carried away....

More tomorrow, gotta get some illustration work done tonight.

Work-In-Progress of the little monster thing I was painting.  I think more artists should show their works in progress, and their experimentation with new styles, etc., etc.  Instead we have every professional artist only doing one style, and while it lends to some great stuff, I personally feel like I'd get bored.  Anyway, here's the painting waaay early before it's done.

CU of a work in progress of a painting I'm doing for the next show I'm in.  Acrylic on canvas.  Score.

Eh, I kinda like the old one better

See below for the O.S. (original sketch). Any suggestions? Anyone?
