10 min fig. study + new cute monster

Did a quick 10 min. figure study, instead of painting (like my old Academy instructors would prefer I do), I actually did the line sketch with black acrylic, then did some fills, hit a few highlights, and washed in a quick background.  Eh, cool.

I also did this new little cute monster thing.  I think his name is "Stabby."  He's not quite sure what to do with the knife, but I'm sure he'll figure something out. 

I find myself rapidly doing more and more of these cutesy little blog creatures, as opposed to my more nightmarish beasts or the horrific portraits.  Hmm, we'll see where this is all going.

 Another art dump, since I've been too swamped with Bazaar Bizarre (which went fabulously, I might add) to really post.  Here it goes.

I did this quick paint for a friend's birthday present.  Strongly based off a really good photo ref.

Pretty much finished "Horror in the Alley" piece.  Might keep tweaking it, but overall, I'm pretty happy.

Since today is 10-10-10 (!!) and is supposed to be scary or something, I've decided to start painting this little horror-inspired sketch that I did in my sketchbook.  Above is the original sketch and scan.  Notice that I have all the perspective wrong and I did the figure much larger on the bottom of the page knowing that I was going to complete this piece digitally.

 

In this next piece I worked out the composition, and fixed the perspective (thanks to lots of help from perspective master Eve).  Using the magic of layers in photoshop, I moved stuff around until I was happy with the placement and the feel of the piece.  I also added a little rat in the bottom, created a shoulder for the beast up front, and used the perspective tool to get the guy drawn right.

Now I turned the drawing into multiply layers and started blocking in general light/shadow patterns.  The main light source is going to be the fire in the barrel the homeless man is warming his hands on, and the other source is going to be the glow from the creature's eye and the reflected light off of the dumpster.

Double-header today.  Top is the sketch for the next illustration I'm working on about gravediggers taking a wrong turn, and the bottom is a WIP for an illustration about a succubus at work.  Yay creepy stuff!

I absolutely NEVER draw the stereotypical babe-in-the-wilderness type stuff (I'm possibly the exact opposite of Frank Cho, who is damn good at what he does), but I figured since I never do it, I should at least do a quick sketch of one once in my life.  Here it is, most likely never to be finished. 

And no, the symbolism is not lost on me.

So here is the sketch of my next digital paint that I plan to work on.  The story behind this is that some sort of demon has stolen away an innocent townsperson, and this intrepid hero on creature-back is now chasing that jerk demon down.
