10 min fig. study + new cute monster

Did a quick 10 min. figure study, instead of painting (like my old Academy instructors would prefer I do), I actually did the line sketch with black acrylic, then did some fills, hit a few highlights, and washed in a quick background.  Eh, cool.

I also did this new little cute monster thing.  I think his name is "Stabby."  He's not quite sure what to do with the knife, but I'm sure he'll figure something out. 

I find myself rapidly doing more and more of these cutesy little blog creatures, as opposed to my more nightmarish beasts or the horrific portraits.  Hmm, we'll see where this is all going.

Quick (~5 min) sketch of Hinata.  Although I personally don't like to do fan art (or crappy fan art, at that), sometimes the only inspiration is a little keychain character.  What else are you gonna do?

A bunch of head studies.  First, a master copy of Gibson, then some digital pen and inks. The second one sort of got away from me, so I slapped on some color to make it less sucky.  Still working on the economy of line, which is one of my biggest hurdles.

Eve commented that in a lot of my art, people tend to have words seemingly spill out of their mouths. I responded that for me, the idea of words and secrets and things we say almost escaping or being expunged from our bodies are a very interesting and compelling visualization. I think the animated Oren-Iishi backstory scene in "Kill Bill" when the young girl lets out a whimper and then pulls it back into her mouth is definitely a major inspiration. Again, the idea of text and imagery going back and forth in this little sketchy quickie of mine.

I watched The Dark Knight a few weeks ago (again), and besides me walking around annoying Eve with the "wHy So sERIouS??" line all the time, I've also been working on some logo prelims for a sketch comedy troupe. Thus, besides the craft fair I'm putting on, my brain has been all about clowns.

Anyway, I slept early (~12:45ish) and am now feeling overloaded with things to do before I go to work at 12:30. So, I wanted to throw up a sketch and get back to work.

Also, I taught the Japanese Stab Binding class last night at Paper Source, and although we didn't get through as many stitches as I wanted to, I think everyone took away a good deal of basic stab binding knowledge and hopefully they can apply it to many more books.

Quick Studies, first of many

So in a pretty unbelievable stroke of luck, my Quick Studies class is not only taught by Craig Nelson, but also my Tomotsu Takashima. Holy frickin' crap, this class is awesome.

Anyhoo, I just figured I'd post a 60-minute study I did today. Yay for posting new work! Yay for a awesome semester! Now I just have to get all my crap together for my silkscreen class tomorrow!
