Although he needs a haircut, this little guy is great for late-evening strolls as his eyes will light the way.

This little guy is pretty hungry..I would maybe recommend checking out Chef Jia's Rolling Lettuce Vegetables and/or the Honey Glazed Yams.

Still a long way to go to a finish, but it's looking a lot better now, sorta like an actual illustration -_-. The going is long and hard, but fun.
I may take a break tomorrow to whip out something a bit more spontaneous. I'm not sure when I'll finish this guy, as I realized that I have to get crackin' on getting my work finished for Hyphen. I'm not quite as good about documenting my painting process, so you may see some quick n' fun digital stuff over the next few days. Just a head's up.

Moving on to some color, I decided I needed to darken the value of the treeline and the opposing cliffs so that the lighting makes sense. I now just realized that the waterfall would also be much darker, so that's something else I'll have to work on. Just gotta keep keeping on...

So I had to work late, then I went out with co-workers to check out "Exit Through the Gift Shop." Fun times. Thus, I really only had time to do a quick value study. I usually don't do these, but I thought the composition was off, and wanted to see if value would fix it. It didn't, so I changed the location of the rope bridge, and added some trees to help frame the piece. I think this works a bit better, as even though I intentionally had the bridge leading away from the demon in the original sketch (I wanted to make it look as if the demon had even more of a lead on the hero), it ended up leading your eye out of the composition.
I think this works a lot better now, and will proceed to start painting.

So here is the sketch of my next digital paint that I plan to work on. The story behind this is that some sort of demon has stolen away an innocent townsperson, and this intrepid hero on creature-back is now chasing that jerk demon down.

This is a scanned, then digitally-colored lino block so I can plan out the carving a bit better. Yay for squid cars.

Back to the creepy illustrations. I've realized - I like creepy illustrations. Guess what this guy likes to eat? It rhymes with "Tabies."

Being that today we're headed over to my good friend Michelle and John's wedding, I'm posting something I did a while back - their wedding invitation design. If you're wondering why there are weird blank spaces, it's cuz they're getting married at a residence, so yeah. I also designed a map card, but since it's basically all about their address, it will have to remain a secret.
I also had to design a Chinese language version...not the easiest thing to do when you don't know kanji.
These were actually letterpressed on Crane Pearl Lettra, so the blue gets toned down a bit on the soft creamy paper, and you don't get such a crazy bright look.
Anyway, congrats Mitchelle and John! Woooooo!

A bunch of head studies. First, a master copy of Gibson, then some digital pen and inks. The second one sort of got away from me, so I slapped on some color to make it less sucky. Still working on the economy of line, which is one of my biggest hurdles.

Done! Sometimes it's hard to believe that a simple little thumb like below can turn into a full-finished piece. It was definitely a challenge to keep coming back to this over a few days, but that's the discipline I'll need to do commercial book illustration work (which I'd like to get into).

Trying not to let myself get sick of this and to take it all the way to a finish. Much happier than yesterday (for obvious reasons).

Didn't have much time to work on this, but I darkened the foreground and did a quick lay-in on the castle thing. So far to go...

A bit of process/WIP stuff...
First off is a scan of my sketchbook. Next is the start of a rough color lay-in with the larger, detailed pencil sketches dropped in.
Quick color of the flying demon thing and the guy being carried away....
More tomorrow, gotta get some illustration work done tonight.

This is a new card design I think I'll sell in the Etsy shop. I made it originally for a friend who was feeling down, but is a pretty cool person. Anyway, I thought I was pretty clever with this one :)

Another painter study. Woo! Not hating it nearly as much as I did yesterday. Sort of figured out how to do my signature style of background, so I'm pretty pumped about that.

Done in Corel Painter, 30 minute speed paint. As per Eve's suggestion, I think I'm going to try and work in Painter more.
In other news, I saw How to Train Your Dragon (we took the trip to Berkeley today) and it was pretty awesome. I'm bummed it's no longer playing in SF, but if you haven't seen it, and it's still playing where you are, I highly suggest it. Especially pay attention to the creature design. I must say, since dragons are so overdone, it's challenging to create a new look, but they did a pretty damn good job of it.

Work-In-Progress of the little monster thing I was painting. I think more artists should show their works in progress, and their experimentation with new styles, etc., etc. Instead we have every professional artist only doing one style, and while it lends to some great stuff, I personally feel like I'd get bored. Anyway, here's the painting waaay early before it's done.

I decided to draw Hitler how I see him - a little bully. He is a little despicable tyrant whose hatred, prejudice, and little-penis syndrome caused one of the worst genocides in history. What an asshole.

I sketched this out while waiting for people to show up to the graduation party we had last Friday. Tried to do something on the creepier side. I'm currently working on paintings this little beast up in photoshop.
